Join printmaker Devan Penniman for a block printing on fabric workshop! Devan, the Mancos Common Press Artist-in-Residence (from October 28th through November 6th), will be spending her time creating art focused on endangered flora and fauna of the Mancos and Mesa Verde area.

In this workshop, we’ll tie in her studies to explore local plants and animals that we can use to design/carve block prints to print on tote bags. Feel free to swap blocks for creative patterns or layouts! This class welcomes all skill levels, and pre-drawn images will be available if you prefer not to draw your own design.

Skills Covered:
-Transferring your image to the block
-Carving techniques
-Printing on fabric

After the workshop, join us for a reception with Devan on Monday, November 4, where she’ll share her work created in Mancos —and we’d love to showcase yours too!

All supplies are included and you will leave with a printed tote bag and a stamp you can reuse over and over.

  • No experience required for this class.
  • Ages 12 and up.
  • All materials provided.
  • Class size is limited to 15 students.

INSTRUCTOR:

Devan Penniman is a printmaker and letterpress artist from Fruita, Colorado. She discovered her passion for letterpress in college in 2014 and hasn’t looked back since. In 2020, during the pandemic, she turned to printmaking after losing access to her shop, finding joy in its meditative process. Devan appreciates the slow pace of setting type or carving blocks, a practice that brings her a rare sense of calm. She is a full-time printmaker and an adjunct professor, teaching letterpress and design at Colorado Mesa University. Inspired by the desert around her, Devan draws from its endless supply of cacti, dirt, dinosaurs, birds, and animals. When not creating, she loves exploring the desert with her partner and two dogs, whether on foot or by bike. Her current songs on repeat is Again, Tomorrow by Local News Legends and Does the Swallow Dream of Flying by Cosmo Sheldrake.
